Shreyas Iyer May Face Early Dismissal as India T20I Captain

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer could be sacked as India’s T20I captain much earlier than originally intended. Appointed just last month by chief selector Ajit Agarkar to lead a new two-year cycle heading into the next T20 World Cup, Iyer’s future now looks highly precarious. A disastrous start to his leadership stint and immense pressure regarding his individual batting form have forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to rethink its long-term vision.

Disastrous Leadership Start Fuels Rumors

The central driver behind these sudden talks of dismissal is India’s embarrassing performance under Iyer’s leadership during the tour of Ireland. The reigning T20 World Cup champions suffered a shocking 2-0 series defeat against the hosts, snapping India’s historic streak of 16 consecutive T20I series wins. Iyer joined an unwanted club by becoming only the second Indian captain to lose his first two games in charge. This historic upset has subjected his tactical decisions and captaincy capabilities to severe media and fan scrutiny.

Mounting Pressure Over Individual Performance

Beyond tactical failures, Iyer’s spot in the shortest format is being heavily questioned. Critics have pointed out that he wasn’t even a regular part of the T20I squad for the last three years before his sudden elevation to captaincy. Much like his predecessor, Suryakumar Yadav—who was dropped despite a stellar captaincy winning record due to a dip in individual form—Iyer faces identical pressure. If India fails to turn things around in the ongoing 5-match T20I series against England, the BCCI think-tank may look to appoint a replacement before the upcoming Asian Games and home fixtures.
