Iyer Blames Belfast Conditions for India’s T20I Series Loss

India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has spoken out about his side’s stunning 2-0 series defeat to Ireland, pointing to Belfast’s unfamiliar playing conditions as a major factor behind the upset. Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Durham ahead of the five-match T20I series against England, Iyer described the ground as lacking a proper stadium atmosphere, with a slow outfield and unusual dimensions that made things difficult for his team.

A Tough Admission

Iyer did not shy away from taking responsibility for the loss. He admitted that the squad had fallen short in analysing and planning for the series, allowing Ireland to use the ground conditions to their advantage. The defeat was particularly significant because it brought an end to India’s remarkable run of 16 consecutive series and tournament wins unbeaten, a streak during which the team had become the first nation to defend the T20 World Cup title successfully, losing just one match across both editions.

Pressure Mounts on Captain

The unexpected result has intensified scrutiny on Iyer’s captaincy, especially given the circumstances of his return to the side. He had stepped back into the national team directly as captain after being out of the setup for 63 matches, making the timing of this setback all the more challenging for him personally.

Despite the criticism, Iyer struck a confident tone about the road ahead. He expressed optimism about his own form and leadership, noting that he feels far more comfortable with the conditions England’s venues typically offer compared to what India encountered in Belfast. With the T20I series against England now underway, Iyer and his team will be looking to put the Ireland setback behind them and return to winning ways on more familiar territory.
