BCCI Backs Sooryavanshi Despite Shoving Row

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has found himself at the centre of controversy after a heated on-field altercation during India A’s Tri-Nation A Series clash against Sri Lanka A. The 15-year-old was provoked by a comment from Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage, leading to a tense verbal exchange that escalated when Sooryavanshi shoved his opponent. Teammates and officials intervened swiftly, ensuring the situation did not spiral further. The incident has sparked a mixed reaction from fans and experts, and both players involved could reportedly face financial penalties for their conduct.

Manjrekar Calls for Tougher Action

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar was among the most vocal critics of how the matter was handled. He suggested that, had he been in charge of India A, he would have rested Sooryavanshi for the subsequent fixture against Afghanistan A. Manjrekar argued that sitting the youngster out would have sent a clear message that physical confrontations are unacceptable, regardless of the provocation, and that such a step could have served as a valuable lesson for a player still early in his career.

BCCI Secretary Urges Focus on Cricket

While Manjrekar pushed for disciplinary action, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia struck a more measured tone. He emphasised that India A’s young players are competing in a crucial tournament that could shape their senior team prospects, and that energy is best spent on performance rather than off-field distractions. Saikia stressed that the team’s priority remains delivering strong performances and securing victory in the tri-nation series, rather than dwelling on the incident.

As the series continues, all eyes will be on whether Sooryavanshi’s place in the playing XI is affected, and how the BCCI ultimately handles the disciplinary fallout from the altercation.
