Zee Entertainment in Final Talks With FIFA for World Cup 2026 India Rights

Zee Entertainment is reportedly on the verge of securing the FIFA World Cup 2026 broadcast and streaming rights for India, with an announcement expected imminently. The development comes just two weeks before the tournament kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. India had remained one of the last major markets without a confirmed broadcaster, triggering fan anxiety and even legal petitions over a potential blackout.

A Lengthy Rights Battle Finally Nears Resolution

FIFA’s initial asking price of $100 million for combined 2026 and 2030 rights proved too steep for Indian broadcasters. Reliance-Disney, Sony, and FanCode each walked away from negotiations, citing high costs and late-night match timings that limit advertising revenue. FIFA progressively lowered its expectations, and current talks with Zee are believed to be in the $30–35 million range for 2026 rights alone — a steep drop from the original demand.

Zee’s Bold Return to Premium Sports

The potential deal aligns with Zee’s broader strategy to re-enter premium sports broadcasting. The company has recently launched Unite8 Sports, comprising four new channels in Hindi and English, covering football, cricket, kabaddi, and combat sports. Securing the World Cup would give the fledgling network a flagship property to establish itself in India’s highly competitive sports media market. Matches would be available across Zee’s linear channels and its ZEE5 streaming platform.

If finalised, Indian fans will have access to all 104 matches of the expanded 48-team tournament. A breakdown in talks, however, could leave FIFA relying on its own FIFA+ platform — a far less visible option in a market that accounted for 2.9% of global TV viewership in 2022.
