In Dubai, an Arab man was fined Dh4,000 for sharing a WhatsApp ad which claimed he would provide maid services at a very low price. It turned out to be a fraud, and a couple was tricked into paying a deposit of Dh2,000.
As per the new domestic worker’s law in UAE, maids can be employed only via licensed agencies.
The public prosecution’s investigations verified that the fraudster offered fake maid recruitment assistance, stating in his WhatsApp posts that he might bring domestic workers from different countries.
An unidentified lady, who posed as his employee, assisted him in the racket by replying to queries and also facilitating the transaction.
According to the male victim, he saw the ad on the messaging app and notified his wife about it because they were seeking a maid. According to court papers, she called the number in the post and spoke with an Arab woman.
The victim stated to the authorities that he saw the advertisement on the messaging app and informed his wife about it as they were looking for a housemaid. She then reached the number mentioned in the post and spoke to an Arab lady, as per court records.
The employee acknowledged they had an available worker and could travel to the victim’s home the same day after the victim requested a maid from a particular African nation. The recruitment cost was set at Dh3,500, and a Dh2,000 deposit was required immediately. Once the maid is there, the remaining parts will be transferred.
The couple promptly paid the money in hopes of hiring the maid immediately, but they stopped communicating with the accused. They awaited the maid’s arrival, and when she didn’t, they made another futile attempt to contact the con artists.
The spouse then made the decision to call the police, and using the specifics of the bank transfer, the officers were able to detain the individual who was allegedly given the money.
The accused rejected the accusation, claiming he was unaware of the incident and failed to appear in court. He was found guilty and given a Dh4,000 fine.
