Sri Lanka’s ‘King of Galle’ Poses Big Threat to India

India’s Test squad has landed in Sri Lanka for a two-match series, and former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof has flagged left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya as the hosts’ sharpest weapon ahead of the series opener in Galle on August 15.

Jayasuriya’s Galle Dominance

Maharoof, who played across all three formats for Sri Lanka, believes Jayasuriya will trouble India’s batters more than any other bowler, with pace spearhead Asitha Fernando also expected to play a key role. Since debuting against Australia in July 2022, the 34-year-old has taken 81 wickets in 11 Tests at the Galle International Stadium alone, a haul that has earned him the nickname “King of Galle.” Overall, he has claimed 125 wickets in 23 Tests, and his 100 wickets in 20 World Test Championship matches make him Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker in the competition.

Wind Could Be the Deciding Factor

Maharoof pointed to conditions at the venue as another challenge for India, noting that crosswinds at Galle typically help spinners generate extra drift, meaning both sides’ slow bowlers will need to adjust quickly. Jayasuriya, born in Matale, is yet to face India in international cricket and will be keen to make an early impression in his first series against them.

Sri Lanka’s selectors have not yet announced their squad for the series, leaving open questions about which other spin options might support Jayasuriya as the hosts look to challenge India on home soil.
