Sonia Gandhi Takes Swipe at PM Modi Over Singh Remarks

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday took a sharp dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that since he is these days “forgiving” India’s students for attacking him, perhaps he could use the opportunity to forgive himself for his “undignified slander” against former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Her remarks came days after the Supreme Court gave Singh a clean chit in the coal block allocation case, accepting the CBI’s closure report and setting aside the special court’s earlier order.

Congress Leader Hails Singh’s “Vindication”

Writing in an article for The Indian Express, the Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson said Singh’s record of integrity and accountability stood in stark contrast to how the Modi government has functioned. She said history would remember Singh kindly as a “quiet, gentle, but most consequential” prime minister. Gandhi added that the July 2026 judgment closed one of the most “tragic arcs” of India’s public discourse, describing the case against Singh as a coordinated “witch-hunt” involving the bureaucracy, media, judiciary, civil society, and the RSS and BJP.

“Bogus Crusade” Ends in “Nothingness,” Says Gandhi

Gandhi said the campaign against Singh had come to its “inevitable conclusion of nothingness,” asserting that he had been vindicated on every count. She further alleged that the attack on Singh was a deliberate attempt to divert public attention from his government’s economic record, pointing to the growth and reforms achieved during his decade in office. Singh, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2014 and passed away in December 2024, had faced years of scrutiny in the coal block allocation matter before the apex court’s recent ruling brought closure to the case.
