East Bengal End Six-Year Wait, Clinch ISL Title on Final Day

East Bengal were crowned Indian Super League champions for the first time since joining the competition in 2020-21, ending a six-year wait for top-division glory with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Inter Kashi on the final day of the season. The win saw them finish on 26 points — level with arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant — but ahead on goal difference, denying Bagan a historic third consecutive ISL Shield.

A Comeback for the Ages

Inter Kashi drew first blood through Alfred Planas in the 14th minute, leaving East Bengal with a mountain to climb. The Red and Gold Brigade regrouped and came out firing in the second half. Youssef Ezzejjari levelled matters in the 49th minute before Mohammed Rashid sealed the win with a composed finish in the 72nd minute, sending East Bengal fans into raptures.

Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, did all they could by beating SC Delhi 2-1 courtesy of goals from Manvir Singh and Jamie Maclaren. However, their inferior goal difference ultimately proved the difference between glory and heartbreak.

Mumbai City and the Historic Relegation

Mumbai City FC rounded off a strong campaign by defeating Punjab FC to finish third on 25 points, just one behind the title-winning sides. The season was also notable for a landmark moment in Indian football — the introduction of relegation to the ISL for the first time. Mohammedan Sporting Club, finishing bottom with a mere three points, became the first club in ISL history to be relegated.
