FIFA World Cup 2026: Indian Fans Left in the Dark Over Live Streaming

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 set to kick off on June 11, Indian football fans are caught in uncertainty as no domestic broadcaster has officially secured streaming rights. Major networks JioStar and Sony remain locked in a financial standoff with FIFA, leaving millions of supporters without a confirmed platform just weeks before the tournament begins.

The Rights Dispute Explained

FIFA initially demanded $100 million for Indian broadcast rights before lowering expectations to roughly $35 million. JioStar countered with a $20 million bid, which FIFA rejected. The deadlock is further complicated by match timings — since the tournament is hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, most games will air in India between midnight and early morning, making prime-time advertising recovery nearly impossible for broadcasters. Public broadcaster Doordarshan has also confirmed it will not be acquiring rights, closing off the free-to-air option entirely.

FIFA+ Steps In as the Backup

If negotiations collapse before opening night, FIFA plans to stream all 104 matches through its own platform, FIFA+, accessible on smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. Additionally, a global YouTube partnership will allow rights-holding broadcasters to stream the first ten minutes of every match for free — though Indian fans can only access these geo-restricted streams if a domestic partner joins the program.

Indian viewers should prepare for late-night football regardless of which platform ultimately airs the matches. Group-stage kickoffs will translate to 9:30 PM, 12:30 AM, 3:30 AM, and 6:30 AM IST — demanding dedication from even the most passionate fans.
