GNLU Forms High-Level Review Committee Amid Allegations

The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) has taken significant steps to assess its performance over the past five years. A proactive move has established a High-Level Review Committee (HLRC), signaling the university’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Constitution of HLRC and Sub-Committee:

Headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra, the HLRC comprises eminent personalities from the legal and administrative spheres. 

Additionally, a sub-committee of two senior counsels of the Gujarat High Court has been formed to address specific concerns.

Involvement of GNLU Key Members:

Notable figures such as Senior Counsel Kamal Trivedi, Attorney General R Venkataramani, and former Additional Chief Secretary MM Shrivastav are among the distinguished members of the HLRC, ensuring a comprehensive review process.

The initiative stems from a Suo Motu petition initiated by the High Court (HC) following allegations of sexual harassment against two students, as reported by Ahmedabad Mirror. The HC’s intervention underscores the importance of addressing such issues promptly and effectively.

Concerns Addressed by the GNLU Governing Council:

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the GNLU Governing Council convened a meeting on March 23, wherein the decision to form the HLRC was reached. 

Emphasizing student welfare, the Council directed the university to prioritize making a safe and protected environment conducive to reporting such incidents.

Scope of HLRC’s Review:

The HLRC’s mandate encompasses a comprehensive assessment of the university’s performance across various domains, including academics, administration, finance, and student security. 

This holistic approach aims to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
