Gus Atkinson Hit Twice by Josh Tongue, Raises England Injury Fears

England’s fast bowling stocks took a nervous hit after Gus Atkinson was struck twice on the head by fellow England pacer Josh Tongue during a County Championship match between Surrey and Nottinghamshire. The incident immediately raised alarm bells with the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s just weeks away on June 4.

Atkinson, batting for Surrey, initially chose to continue his innings after each blow, but was eventually withdrawn from the match on 27 runs as a precautionary concussion measure. Reece Topley came on as his replacement.

Surrey Coach Offers Reassurance

Surrey coach Gareth Batty moved quickly to ease concerns, confirming that Atkinson had passed all on-field concussion assessments. “He felt like he was OK, but duty of care comes into it. He’s OK in himself,” said Batty. The update brought considerable relief to England supporters, though the situation underlined just how fragile their fast bowling resources currently are.

England’s Pace Attack Hanging by a Thread

The timing could hardly be worse for England. Brydon Carse is sidelined with injury, Mark Wood remains in recovery, and Jofra Archer is committed to the IPL, which concludes on May 31 — leaving little turnaround time before the Lord’s Test. Captain Ben Stokes has only recently returned to competitive cricket after a lengthy absence.

That leaves Atkinson and Tongue as the only fully fit seamers in contention, making Tuesday’s incident all the more alarming. England will be hoping Atkinson faces no delayed symptoms and is available for selection when the New Zealand series gets underway.
