Captain Smit Machchhar’s bravery prevents catastrophic aviation disaster.
In a dramatic turn of events that could have ended in tragedy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary courage during a mid-air emergency. Despite being gravely injured, Machchhar’s actions enabled passengers and crew to thwart an attempted crash, saving countless lives.
Netanyahu, speaking in an interview with Fox News, described the pilot’s bravery as “unbelievably courageous.” He revealed that Machchhar had been stabbed and attacked with an axe during the incident, leaving him severely wounded and covered in blood. Yet, in the face of immense pain and danger, the pilot managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers to overpower the co-pilot who allegedly tried to crash the aircraft. “He was bleeding profusely, but he fought back and prevented a disaster,” Netanyahu said, adding that the pilot is currently fighting for his life.
The crisis unfolded when the plane plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds after Machchhar was attacked. Fortunately, two other flydubai pilots onboard managed to regain control and safely land the jet in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu said Machchhar’s intervention prevented what could have been a catastrophic aviation tragedy, calling him “a true hero” and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Captain Smit Machchhar, an experienced aviator with over 13 years of commercial flying, has built a distinguished career. He previously served with SpiceJet for a decade, where he worked as a line training captain and senior commander. In 2022, he joined flydubai as a direct entry captain, continuing his career on the Boeing 737 fleet. With more than 9,750 flying hours, Machchhar is respected for his deep aviation knowledge and his dedication to training fellow pilots. His brother also recently joined flydubai, underscoring the family’s deep ties to the profession.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with tributes pouring in for Machchhar’s bravery. Netanyahu’s remarks highlight the global recognition of his selfless act, which not only saved lives but also demonstrated the resilience and professionalism of Indian pilots on the international stage. As Machchhar battles for recovery, his courage stands as a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to triumph in the face of unimaginable adversity.
