Four-nation visit to focus on trade, strategic ties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing for a significant four-nation tour in December, aimed at advancing India’s economic and strategic interests across Europe and North America. The journey will include stops in Germany, the United States, Canada, and Belgium, with trade agreements and multilateral cooperation expected to dominate the agenda.
The visit is likely to begin in Berlin, where Modi will participate in the India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC). This engagement is expected to reinforce bilateral cooperation in technology, industry, and sustainable development, underscoring Germany’s role as a key partner in India’s modernization efforts.
From Berlin, Modi is expected to travel to Miami, Florida, to lead India’s delegation at the G20 Summit scheduled for December 14–15. A bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is anticipated, with trade negotiations and strategic defence cooperation at the forefront. While discussions may highlight progress in India-U.S. relations, uncertainty remains over the conclusion of a long-pending trade deal, complicated by new tariff authorities under recent U.S. legislation. Efforts are also underway to convene a QUAD leaders’ summit involving India, the U.S., Japan, and Australia, though official confirmation is pending.
The third leg of the tour will take Modi to Canada, where talks on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are expected to reach a decisive stage. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed optimism about concluding negotiations by the G20 timeline. The CEPA aims to double bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030, opening new opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, energy, critical minerals, and aerospace. Modi’s visit is seen as a reset in relations, moving beyond past tensions and ushering in a more pragmatic phase of cooperation.
The final stop will be Brussels, where Modi is expected to meet Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and participate in the signing of the India-EU trade agreement. The European Parliament is expected to ratify the deal by December, paving the way for implementation. The Brussels event is likely to be a symbolic culmination of India’s growing engagement with Europe.
While the Ministry of External Affairs has yet to announce the itinerary formally, preparations are underway in all four capitals. Modi’s engagements with political leaders, industry representatives, and the Indian diaspora are expected to highlight India’s expanding global footprint and its pursuit of stronger economic and strategic partnerships.
