PM Modi proposes a single national police uniform
The PM Modi insists that he is not imposing his views on states and believes police uniforms should have a brand recall.
PM Modi floated the idea of “one nation, one police uniform” on Friday. He was speaking at a conference of state home ministers on internal security issues in Faridabad, Haryana.
Mr Modi stated that he was not imposing his views on states but that it was an idea worth considering. He believes police uniforms, like the country’s red-and-black post boxes, should have a brand recall.
“We should think of one nation, one police uniform along the lines of one nation, one ration card; one nation, one mobility card; one nation, one sign language.” This will benefit police officers because a high-quality product will be available. “Belts, caps, and uniforms will be mass-produced,” he stated.
He said that, just as post boxes can be identified from a distance. Even by nonliterate people, a standard police uniform will ensure that the police have a distinct identity.
Most police forces wear khaki-coloured uniforms, but a few. Such as those in Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, and Goa, wear white uniforms.
Nagaland’s petition
At the conference, Y. Patton, Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister said he hope the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would be repealed in more areas of the state. He added that the Centre removed the AFSPA from 15 police station limits in seven districts as the state’s law and order situation improved. The State Police implemented a unique security plan in all de-notified areas.
“We have further geared ourselves up for taking full responsibility for all of the areas. That have been take out of the AFSPA, also we have been able to keep the situation firmly under control,” Mr Patton said. We are confident that as the situation improves, the Central Government will consider removing more areas from the AFSPA and entrusting the State Government with full responsibility for security also law and order in these areas.”
