Dhurandhar Stumbles in Japan Despite Global Success

The Ranveer Singh-led action franchise Dhurandhar has been a massive commercial hit worldwide, with its two installments together pulling in more than ₹3,100 crore at the global box office. The first film brought in roughly ₹1,307 crore, while the sequel pushed that further to around ₹1,813 crore, cementing the series as one of the biggest Indian box office success stories in recent memory. Yet that momentum did not carry over into Japan, where the latest release struggled to make any real impact in its opening days.

A Disappointing Opening Day

The film debuted in Japanese theatres on July 10, but the response from local audiences was underwhelming. By 2 PM on its first day, the film had drawn only around 449 admissions across 57 locations. That number climbed only modestly through the rest of the day, finishing at roughly 900 total admissions spread across nearly 80 screens — nowhere near enough to break into Japan’s top 25 films for the weekend.

How It Compares to Other Indian Films

The muted reception stands in sharp contrast to how other major Indian titles have performed in the Japanese market. RRR, for instance, managed close to 8,230 admissions, while Saaho drew about 6,510 — both far outpacing Dhurandhar’s opening in the same territory. The gap highlights how difficult it remains for Indian cinema to break through with mainstream Japanese audiences, even when a film is thriving elsewhere.

Despite the soft start overseas, Dhurandhar’s overall numbers remain strong, driven largely by its performance in India and other international markets, suggesting the Japan release is more a localized setback than a sign of trouble for the franchise as a whole.
