On Saturday, the mammoth nuclear-powered USS Nimitz and her accompanying warships entered the Indian Ocean by crossing the Malacca Strait, which has led to the PASSEX (passing exercise) between the two navies, which have interoperability via a series of exercises including “Malabar”.

The USS Nimitz carrier strike group has completed operational deployment and “freedom of navigation” mission in the South China Sea. The US has backed up its support for its allies and partners in the region to counter China’s aggressive and expansionist ways to create unneeded tensions in the area. The US has 10 Nimitz-class supercarriers deployed around the globe, each of which is weighed 100,000 ton and is capable of carrying 90 fighter planes.

Indian warships to take part in the exercise:

Led by eastern naval fleet commander Rear Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Indian warships, including frigates, destroyers, and submarines along with maritime patrol aircraft, are taking part in the exercise. These warships are from the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) headquartered at Visakhapatnam and Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC).

Last month, the Indian and Japanese warships had also carried out a small exercise near the Malacca Strait. India participates with Japan and the US in the high voltage “Malabar” naval combat exercise but has yet not decided to include Australia, but sources say that is invitation is in the works.
