Shami Overlooked Again as Bhuvneshwar Returns for India’s New Zealand Tour

The BCCI selectors have announced India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, and the selection has sparked fresh debate. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a recall after four years away from the format, while Mohammed Shami, despite strong domestic performances, has been left out once again.

Until last week, the two veterans were in a similar position. Both are almost the same age, and both were outside the national setup despite consistent displays in domestic cricket. Bhuvneshwar’s comeback has changed that picture, leaving Shami as the one still waiting for a call.

Shami’s Long Wait for an India Recall

Shami played important roles in India’s 2023 World Cup campaign and the 2025 Champions Trophy, and he last turned out for the national team in March 2025. Injuries initially kept him sidelined. Although he has since recovered and returned to action for Bengal, the selectors have not brought him back into the India fold.

Shami Stays Focused on the Ranji Trophy

Rather than dwell on the omission, Shami is looking ahead to the Ranji Trophy, which begins today. He has emphasised giving his best for Bengal and remains positive about future opportunities, keeping his attention on what he can control on the field.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes Shami deserves a place in the Test and ODI teams. Jaffer also highlighted concerns over inconsistent game time for other seamers, such as Mohammed Siraj, suggesting the pace-bowling pecking order lacks clarity.

With the New Zealand series approaching, attention will stay on how the selectors manage their fast-bowling resources. For Shami, a strong Ranji Trophy season could be the best way to keep his case alive.
