On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at opposition parties for boycotting the inauguration event of the new parliament complex, which is set to take place on May 28.

“The Indian diaspora event in Sydney was attended not only by the Australian Prime Minister, but also by former Prime Ministers, MPs from opposition parties, and members of the ruling party.”

This is the power of democracy. “They all participated in this Indian community programme,” Modi said after returning from a three-nation tour of Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.

At Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, Prime Minister Modi and his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, addressed the diaspora.

During his speech, the Prime Minister declared that India would soon open a consulate in Brisbane to meet the long-standing demand of the diaspora.

Modi’s remark was aimed at the 21 opposition parties who have decided to boycott the PM’s choice to preside over the inauguration event rather than President Droupadi Murmu.

The opposition parties, including the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, stated in a joint statement, “When the soul of democracy has been sucked out of Parliament, we see no value in a new building.”

We have decided to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building as a group.” However, certain non-NDA parties, including the Biju Janata Dal, YSRCP, and TDP, have decided to attend the event.

The NDA quickly condemned the opposition’s boycott, calling it a “contempt for the very essence of democracy.”
