Shubman Gill’s One-Handed Slip Catch Stuns World in India vs Afghanistan ODI

Indian captain Shubman Gill delivered a complete all-round performance in the first ODI against Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala on June 13, producing a jaw-dropping one-handed slip catch and a dominant half-century to lead India to a commanding seven-wicket victory.

A Catch for the Ages

Standing at first slip during the 22nd over of Afghanistan’s rain-curtailed 25-over innings, Gill dived full-stretch to his left and pouched a one-handed blinder to dismiss Allah Gazanfar off debutant Harsh Dubey’s bowling. Gazanfar, the eighth Afghan wicket to fall, was sent back for a duck. The catch instantly went viral on social media, with cricket fans and pundits worldwide calling it one of the finest slip catches ever taken in international cricket. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 195.

Gill Reveals the Story Behind the Catch

Speaking to presenter Murali Karthik at the post-match presentation, Gill revealed that the stunning dismissal was no accident — he had been putting in dedicated work on his slip catching in training. He added that, the night before the match, he had told fielding coach T. Dilip that he had yet to pull off a truly memorable international catch. That wait is now firmly over.

Dominant Chase to Seal the Series Opener

Gill’s brilliance with the ball was matched by his bat as India chased down the target with ease. The 26-year-old remained unbeaten on 84 off just 66 balls, striking 11 boundaries and two sixes to guide India home with 13 balls to spare. The performance earned him the Player of the Match award and gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
