Police used tear gas also water cannons during a BJP protest in Kolkata
Suvendu Adhikari, BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, and other party leaders, including Rahul Sinha. He were arrested as they approached the Second Hooghly Bridge near the secretariat and taken away in a prison van.
Several BJP leaders in West Bengal, including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. He were detained by police today while marching to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ in Kolkata as part of a massive protest against the ruling Trinamool Congress government’s allege corruption.
As protesters clashed with security officials near the Howrah bridge, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. In accumulation, a police car was set on fire. Following the clashes, police detained several BJP workers.
Party members were also detain as a precaution in Raniganj.
Hundreds of BJP supporters from West Bengal arrived in Kolkata and neighboring Howrah this morning for the ‘Nabanna Abhijan,’ or march to the secretariat.
Mr. Adhikari said that as he was being drag away by police, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had “turned West Bengal into North Korea.”
“Chief Minister Mamata does not have the support of her people. So she is enforcing dictatorship in Bengal, similar to North Korea; the police will have to pay for what they are doing; the BJP is coming,” he said.
Mr. Adhikari led the march from Santragachi, while BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh led the protest from north Kolkata.
“The TMC government is afraid of a public uprising; even if they try to halt our protest march, we will resist peacefully; and the state administration will be hold accountable for any untoward developments,” Mr. Ghosh said earlier today.
