Chinmay Sutar’s Unbeaten 400 Powers Mizoram in Ranji Trophy

Chinmay Sutar etched his name into cricket history by remaining unbeaten on 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 Plate Group. The 29-year-old achieved the feat in only his second first-class appearance, just days after being run out for 99 on debut. The former Mumbai white-ball player had left his home city to chase this opportunity.

A Rare Club of Quadruple Centurions

Sutar became only the second batter to score a quadruple century in Ranji Trophy history. He is also just the 10th in first-class cricket to cross 400, joining Brian Lara and Hanif Mohammad. Yet the innings will be remembered as much for its partnership as for its numbers.

When the ninth wicket fell, Sutar was batting on 231, with only number 11 Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak for company. The pair then added an unbroken 189 for the tenth wicket over 46.1 overs, lasting well beyond a full session. Chhakchhuak faced 76 balls for 14 runs, while Sutar managed the strike with remarkable patience against the Nagaland attack.

Small Goals, Big Result

After the day’s play, Sutar explained that the plan was never ambitious. He wanted small partnerships and noted that one can’t plan with tailenders. He told The Indian Express he simply asked his partner to hold on, and that he was not thinking about the milestone even as he closed in on 400. The aim, he said, was to bat as long as possible and post a good score.

Sutar now hopes to help Mizoram reach the Elite stage of the Ranji Trophy. He credits his father as a key inspiration and says his earlier experiences in domestic cricket have shaped his approach.

For a side looking to climb out of the Plate Group, the innings offers both a huge total and a fresh belief that no partnership is too small to matter.
