Punjab prodigy secures medal after dramatic comeback, eyes historic gold
At just 15, Jagsher Singh Khangurra has emerged as one of India’s brightest badminton prospects, showcasing resilience and maturity beyond his years at the BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo. The young shuttler from Punjab stunned fans with a spirited fightback in the quarter-finals, saving match point to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Yuan-Syue Jhuang 6-15, 17-15, 15-12. The victory not only guaranteed him a medal but also set the stage for a potential golden finish.
The match began shakily, with Jhuang dominating the first game and pushing Khangurra to the brink of elimination in the second. But instead of crumbling under pressure, the teenager relied on self-motivation, reminding himself of his parents, his country, and the importance of the moment. That mental reset transformed his approach, allowing him to claw back the second game before sealing the decider with sheer determination.
Khangurra’s journey to the semi-finals has been equally impressive. He brushed aside Malaysia’s Lee Qian Chong in straight games, toppled Thailand’s seeded Punnatat Prempunpong, and overcame challengers from Mauritius and Algeria in earlier rounds. Seeded 14th, he now faces Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana for a place in the final- a match that could propel him into the history books.
For Khangurra, this breakthrough comes after years of dedication. Training at the Centre for Badminton Excellence in Bengaluru under coaches Sagar Chopda and Muniramu G, he has already collected six international medals. He draws inspiration from senior players like Lakshya Sen, studying their tactical positioning and rally construction to refine his game. While he acknowledges the need to build more power, his ability to adapt under pressure is already setting him apart.
India’s record at the World Juniors includes one gold, five silvers, and six bronzes in boys’ singles. By securing at least a bronze, Khangurra has added to that legacy. Yet for the teenager who has dreamt of this stage for years, the medal is only a milestone. His focus remains firmly on the bigger prize—bringing home gold for India.
With confidence soaring and momentum on his side, Jagsher Singh Khangurra stands on the cusp of turning promise into history, embodying the grit and ambition of India’s next generation of badminton stars.
