McGrath Urges Bumrah to Pace Career After Injury Scare

Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness remains a pressing concern for the Indian cricket team as it prepares for a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The pace spearhead has been named in the squad, but his final availability hinges on clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence following a knee injury.

How the Injury Happened

Bumrah was struck on the knee while fielding during the second ODI of India’s tour of England, played in Cardiff. The impact injury forced him into a period of rehabilitation, casting doubt over his readiness for the upcoming Test assignment. The BCCI’s medical team is expected to assess his fitness before a final call is made on his inclusion in the playing XI.

McGrath’s Take on Workload Management

Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath weighed in on the situation, calling on the 31-year-old to be thoughtful about balancing his commitments across formats if he wants a long career. McGrath, one of the most durable pacers in cricket history, pointed out that Bumrah still has plenty of playing years ahead, referring to him as a “spring chicken.” He also cautioned against excessive protection of fast bowlers, arguing that building genuine strength and resilience serves players better than lengthy rehabilitation programmes when it comes to withstanding the physical toll of fast bowling.

With India’s Test series against Sri Lanka approaching, all eyes will be on whether Bumrah receives the green light to return. His workload management is expected to remain a talking point throughout the season, especially given his central role in India’s bowling attack across formats.
