IAS Officer Recalls Friend’s Tears Over Madhuri Dixit’s Wedding

IAS officer and Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe recently shared a lighthearted memory from his UPSC preparation days, describing how a close friend broke down in tears on learning that Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit had gotten married. He shared the anecdote during a public interview session in Pune titled “Unstoppable Tukaram.”

A Late-Night Study Routine Turns Emotional

Mundhe explained that around 1998-99, while preparing for the UPSC Mains exam, he and his friend Pankaj — who later became a Customs Commissioner — followed an intense study schedule, often sleeping only a few hours a night. One morning, Pankaj approached him unexpectedly and began crying without explanation, leaving Mundhe alarmed and fearing something serious had happened.

The Unexpected Reason Behind the Tears

After being pressed for an explanation, Pankaj revealed that his emotional state was triggered by newspaper reports of Madhuri Dixit’s wedding to cardiovascular surgeon Dr Shriram Nene. Mundhe recalled being confused at first, only to realize his friend was genuinely upset over the actress’s marriage. The moment drew laughter from the audience when Mundhe narrated it publicly. Dixit, one of Hindi cinema’s leading actresses at the time, was known for films such as Tezaab, Dil, Beta and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! before her marriage in 1999.

When asked which actor he personally admired during those years, Mundhe playfully declined to answer, joking that revealing it might disturb his “smoothly” running married life. Beyond the amusing anecdote, Mundhe used the session to reflect on his childhood, education and long journey toward becoming a civil servant, offering the audience a rare, humanized glimpse into the demanding years behind India’s toughest examination.
