Gill and Kohli Hundreds Power India to Eight-Wicket Win Over West Indies

India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli struck centuries as the hosts beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI on Sunday, September 27. Gill’s four-word post on X, “Fiery innings hi kehde,” featuring Kohli has since gone viral among fans.

Gill Leads From the Front

Gill brought up his 10th ODI hundred, finishing with 110 off 108 balls, including 13 fours and a six. He got a reprieve on 11 when substitute Keemo Paul dropped him off Jayden Seales. Gill reached his fifty off 49 balls and the next off 47 before mistiming a slog sweep off Roston Chase, with Jewel Andrew taking the catch in the deep. The skipper admitted he wished he had stayed till the end. “Honestly, when I got out, I thought I should have finished the game,” he said, though he called it a very satisfying innings.

Gill and Rohit Sharma had earlier put together a 75-run opening stand, before Gill’s knock flourished alongside Kohli.

Kohli Reaches Twin Milestones

Kohli powered to his 55th ODI century and 86th hundred in international cricket. He also completed 15,000 ODI runs, becoming only the second player to reach the landmark in the format.

Gill lavished praise on his senior partner, saying Kohli is enjoying his cricket far more and batting with greater freedom. He noted that Kohli has always been able to clear the boundary at will and is doing so again. The captain said players of Kohli’s stature should simply be allowed to play as they feel on the day, since he wins matches when he is in form.

With the series opener secured comfortably, India will look to build on the momentum from their batting leaders in the next match.
