Greta Gerwig’s Barbie production used so much pink paint in its set design that there was reportedly an international shortage of the colour.

During a recent interview, the director of this year’s highly anticipated film opened up about bringing the ‘kid-ness’ to the production through pink in the dreamhouses.

Greta Gerwig, who previously directed Academy Award-nominated films such as Lady Bird and Little Women, claimed that she wanted everything on the film set to be pink and bright to bring in the perception that the world of Barbie has developed for so many generations.

Greta collaborated with production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer to create the Barbie universe, according to a new interview with Architecture Digest, which also shared previously unseen photographs from the film’s set.

“I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses,” she explained. Why walk down the stairs when you can just slide into the pool? Why slog upstairs when you can take a lift that matches your outfit?… We were essentially creating a Barbie Land, another universe… The importance of retaining the ‘kid-ness’ was vital. I wanted the pinks to stand out and everything to be over the top. “The planet ran out of pink.”

The recent buzz and promotion around the eagerly anticipated film have revived the ‘Barbiecore’ aesthetic in social media, with the hashtag trending in TikTok, which has now amassed an estimated 300 million and above views.

The movie’s recently released trailer sparked interest in the pink style, with residences, furniture, accessories, and costumes all in brilliant pink.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, whose lives undergo profound changes when they enter the real world.

Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and America Ferrara are among the ensemble cast members. It will be released on July 21 in theatres.
