Remarkable journey of Gujarati Bhavesh Bhandari: from wealth to renunciation

In February, Bhavesh Bhandari and his partner gave away all of their possessions in a formal ritual.

A Jain couple from Gujarat, Bhavesh Bhandari and his wife, have made headlines by embarking on a remarkable journey of renunciation after generously donating around ₹200 crore. Here’s a closer look at their inspiring story:

1. Background of Bhavesh Bhandari

Bhavesh Bhandari hails from a well-to-do family in Sabarkantha, Gujarat, and has had a successful career in the construction industry. Over the years, he managed projects in both Sabarkantha and Ahmedabad, contributing to his family’s prosperity.

2. A Generous Act of Giving

In a profound display of selflessness, Bhandari and his wife chose to give away their entire wealth, amounting to ₹200 crore. This act of philanthropy reflects their commitment to living a life of simplicity and spiritual fulfillment.

3. Embracing Monkhood through Diksha

Having relinquished their material possessions, Bhandari and his wife are now preparing to embark on the path of monkhood. They will formally declare their intention to lead an ascetic and spiritually disciplined life through the ceremony of Diksha.

4. Family Commitment to Renunciation

Their decision to adopt monkhood follows the footsteps of their children, who had previously taken Diksha in 2022. With their entire family now committed to a simple and austere lifestyle, they have forsaken even basic comforts such as air conditioners, fans, and electronics.

5. A Symbolic Initiation Ceremony

The initiation ceremony for Bhavesh Bhandari and his wife was marked by a grand procession in Himmatnagar, Gujarat. A significant crowd gathered to witness this momentous occasion, highlighting the community’s support for their decision.

The couple is set to receive formal induction on April 22nd, signifying their transition into monkhood.

A Growing Trend of Renunciation

Bhandari’s decision to embrace monkhood is part of a larger trend seen among individuals from affluent backgrounds in Gujarat.

This includes the recent example of Devanshi, the daughter of a wealthy diamond dealer, who chose to become a monk at the age of nine.

These stories serve as powerful reminders of the transformative power of spirituality and the enduring appeal of a life dedicated to higher pursuits beyond material wealth.
