Ahmedabad: Gujarat government is taking stern action against perpetrators, said MEA on invasions of international students.

The police in Ahmedabad have announced the arrest of two individuals and are actively seeking more suspects following an assault on international students at Gujarat University‘s hostel for offering namaz.

Hospitalization of Students

Two students, one from Sri Lanka and another from Tajikistan, were hospitalized as a result of the incident that occurred on Saturday night.

Arrests and Search Operations

DCP (Zone 7) Tarun Duggal identified the arrested individuals as Hitesh Mevada and Bharat Patel, stating that search operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.

FIR and Police Response

An FIR has been registered against 20-25 unidentified persons under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including rioting, unlawful assembly, causing hurt, damage to property, and criminal trespass. The police have formed nine teams, comprising both crime branch and local police personnel, to investigate the matter.

Government Response

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has condemned the incident, stating that the Gujarat government is taking stringent action against those responsible for the violence.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that one of the injured foreign students has been discharged from the hospital.

Incident Details

The assault took place around 10:50 pm when approximately two dozen individuals entered the Gujarat University hostel, objecting to international students offering namaz on the premises.
