It is not established that MS Dhoni made the wrong move behind the stumps. How come, then, in the first over, the Chennai Super Kings captain missed Prithvi Shaw’s inner edge off Deepak Chahar? Even the best, maybe, have their poor moments.

For young opener Shaw from Delhi Capitals (DC), it was the only false move apart from being beaten by the flight of Piyush Chawla and getting stumped after running down the track in the second ball of the 13th over.

Shaw exemplified the challenging yards he put in on the Mumbai maidan between those two deliveries on his way to being a precocious talent. Finally, on 64 out of 43 balls, he stopped.

Although chasing a decent target of 176, the innings and the missed caught-behind opportunity came back to haunt CSK. As Dhoni’s team fell short by 44 runs and succumbed to their second loss of the tournament, none of their batsmen could lift the tempo enough.

This came even as CSK bowlers tightened the screws on DC batsmen by admitting in the final ten overs just 87 runs after openers Shaw and Shikar Dhawan plundered 88 in the first 10.

Shaw never focused on taking the aerial route on a wide pitch like the Dubai International Stadium. Yet, his 50 of 35 balls. After hitting his half-century, Shaw’s first six came. Shaw put a price on its wicket, like many illustrious batsmen from Mumbai.

He discovered the gaps, particularly in the cover area, and formed the basis of the attack by DC.
Shaw isn’t about muscle ripples.

To score, he does not use brute force, focusing instead on technique. Shaw has a powerful backlift, and he produces strength for his shots in that way. Against CSK, again and again, it came to the fore.

(I hit) a lot of shots from the ground because it’s a good outfield. Instead of making stupid errors, I was trying to touch boundaries. “Shaw said after DC’s innings,” It was about getting into a good place within power play and not losing more than one wicket.

Shaw will open the face of the bat and send the ball speeding toward the cover fence, something short and wide. At mid-off against Sam Curran in the fourth over, there was one lofted shot.

But it was that. No more dangers, as DC maintained a healthy run-rate, taking it slow despite the other opener, Shikhar Dhawan.

All in all, this season, Shaw hit nine fours en route to his first half-century and took part in a 94-run opener standoff just 64 balls. Afterwards, DC’s hold on the match never slipped.
