Rahane Warns Board on Test Cricket After Retiring

Ajinkya Rahane has voiced concern over the sudden exodus of senior players from Indian Test cricket, delivering a pointed message to the team management shortly after announcing his own retirement from the international game. Speaking on the Overlap Cricket YouTube channel, Rahane said the format needs a core group of experienced campaigners to guide younger players, and that India’s current Test setup is leaning too heavily on inexperience.

A Wave of Senior Exits

India’s Test line-up has undergone a dramatic transformation in a little over a year. Virat Kohli stepped away from the format in early May 2025, followed soon after by Rohit Sharma. Cheteshwar Pujara ended his international career in August 2025, and Rahane has now become the latest senior name to depart, leaving the squad stocked mostly with newer faces.

Rahane’s Case for Experience

Rahane argued that a balanced Test side should carry seven or eight senior professionals alongside just two or three younger players, rather than the current mix skewed toward youth. He suggested that the rapid, near-simultaneous departure of India’s most experienced batters has left a gap that could hurt the team and the format itself, and he called for greater recognition of senior players’ role in sustaining Test cricket’s appeal.

Rahane’s own résumé underlines why his words carry weight. He made his India debut in T20Is and ODIs in 2011 before earning his Test cap in 2013, was named vice-captain in 2017, and famously led India to a historic series win in Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He retires with 5,077 Test runs from 85 matches, closing out a career regarded as one of steady, dependable service to Indian cricket.
