Amazon $1.2 Billion Investment in Brand Protection

E-commerce giant Amazon made significant investments in 2023 to safeguard its brand, sellers, and customers from fraud and counterfeiting, as highlighted in the Amazon 2023 Brand Protection Report.

Amazon emphasized the importance of maintaining customer trust, stating that customers expect to receive authentic products when they make a purchase on its platform. Similarly, businesses entrusting Amazon as a selling platform expect a fair and secure environment free from malicious competition.

Robust Investment and Workforce Expansion by Amazon:

In 2023, Amazon allocated over $1.2 billion in funds and expanded its workforce by employing more than 15,000 professionals. This workforce comprised machine learning scientists, software developers, and expert investigators dedicated to combating counterfeit, fraud, and other forms of abuse within the platform.

Amazon used cutting-edge technologies such as document forgery detection and advanced image and video verification to swiftly authenticate government-issued identity documents and verify seller identities on the marketplace.

Prevention of Bad Actor Activities:

Through technological advancements and innovative machine learning-based detection systems, Amazon successfully thwarted over 700,000 attempts by bad actors to create new selling accounts in 2023, significantly reducing such incidents from previous years.

Amazon disclosed its proactive measures in identifying, seizing, and disposing of more than 7 million counterfeit products worldwide in 2023, preventing customer harm and disrupting the resale of counterfeit goods in the retail supply chain.

Legal Pursuits Against Bad Actors by Amazon:

Since its inception in 2020, Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit has initiated legal proceedings against over 21,000 bad actors through litigation and referrals to law enforcement agencies, reinforcing its commitment to combatting counterfeit activities on its platform.

Despite a significant increase in the number of products available on Amazon’s platform, the company reported a notable decrease of over 30 percent in valid notices of infringement submitted by brands since 2020.

Proactive Measures Against Infringing Listings:

Amazon’s proactive controls successfully intercepted more than 99 percent of suspected infringing listings before brands had to identify and report them, demonstrating the efficacy of their preventive measures in preserving brand integrity and customer trust.
