Islamabad HC grants 2 week bail for Imran Khan

On Friday, the Islamabad high court granted Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan two weeks’ bail in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Imran Khan, 70, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, appeared before the same court from which he was pulled and detained on Tuesday.

The arrest sparked widespread protests around the country, with supporters attacking military posts, torching vehicles and ambulances, and looting general stores in various parts of the country.

The government retaliated with a crackdown, arresting roughly 3,000 individuals.

The court appearance on Friday is part of a complicated legal manoeuvring.

The Pakistan Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Khan’s arrest was illegal but asked the Islamabad High Court to revisit its first judgement to uphold the arrest.

The Supreme Court stated it would follow whatever decision the Islamabad court made. If the high court upholds its earlier order, the government has stated it will promptly re-arrest Khan.

Meanwhile, there were allegations that a Lahore Police team had headed for Islamabad to arrest Khan in connection with several cases filed against him in Punjab province.

According to the Dawn newspaper, the police squad is led by the deputy inspector general (investigation).

According to reports, the joint investigation team looking into the cases against Khan has informed the Islamabad high court that it wants the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party arrested.

Khan is facing 121 charges across the country, including treason and blasphemy, as well as instigating unrest and terrorism.

In Lahore, 12 counts of terrorism have been filed against Khan, and 14 complaints have been filed in Faisalabad.
