Selectors Reportedly Want Rohit Sharma Out of 2027 Plans

Rohit Sharma’s future in Indian cricket looked shaky just weeks ago. After modest scores in the first two ODIs against England, chatter grew that the veteran opener would call time on his career following the series-deciding match at Lord’s. Days before that game, though, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia publicly shut down the retirement talk — and Rohit responded in style, striking 138 in a losing effort to become the oldest Indian to score an ODI hundred and the first Indian to reach three figures in an ODI at the historic venue.

A Growing Rift Between Selectors and the Board

Behind the scenes, though, tensions appear far from resolved. A report in Dainik Jagran suggests India’s chief selectors are unhappy with the BCCI leadership’s public backing of Rohit, believing the team’s 2027 World Cup campaign would be better served without him. The report claims one selector had already flagged concerns to a senior BCCI official, and that Rohit himself was made aware of the selectors’ reservations before speculation about a Lord’s farewell surfaced publicly.

Selection Committee’s Own Future in Question

The fallout may not stop with Rohit. According to the report, the episode has put chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s position under scrutiny as well, with former India batter VVS Laxman reportedly being considered as a possible successor when the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting takes place. For now, Rohit’s blistering knock at Lord’s has bought him time, but the tug-of-war between the dressing room, the selection panel and the board over his World Cup future looks far from over.
