SC to hear ‘Tandav’ actor’s makers request today against those 7 FIRs.

Key sentence:

Today, the Supreme Court will address petitions filed by star Zeeshan Ayyub, creative head of Amazon Prime (India) as well as the producers of the ‘Tandav’ web series, seeking security from arrests in the seven FIRs towards them on charges of harming religious feelings as well as telecasting objectionable material.

Ashok Bhushan will take up three petitions, filed separately by Ayyub:

Three petitions, lodged separately by Ayyub, Amazon Prime creative head Aparna Purohit as well as another one jointly pushed by the creator and director of the Over The Top (OTT) show, will be taken up by a court, headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan.

 Justices R Subhash Reddy, as well as MR Shah, are additional judges on the court.

A team of senior advocates headed by veteran lawyer Fali S Nariman would definitely be arguing the petitions.

3 FIRs are pending out of 7:

The petitions demanded that all seven FIRs be clubbed by the top court as well as transferred to a Mumbai court. 

In Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow, Greater Noida including Shahjahanpur, three FIRs were pending out of 7 FIRs for the alleged improper depiction of UP Police personnel, deities, as well as adverse representation of a character playing the part of prime minister in the film.

 

Aside from the FIRs, three additional criminal complaints are pending in Maharashtra:

In Madhya Pradesh, two FIRs were reported, whereas in Karnataka as well as Bihar, one FIR was each registered. Besides the FIRs, in Maharashtra, Delhi and Chandigarh separately, at least three other criminal cases are pending.

The petitions moving ahead for today’s hearing stated that this would cause serious harassment to face prosecutions in different states for those affiliated with ‘Tandav’ as well as that it might be just as well as fair to club all cases in one venue, namely in Mumbai, which is the complainants’ ordinary place of residences.

The Bombay high court had granted a transit pre-arrest bail:

Previously, series director Ali Abbas Zafar, writer Gaurav Solanki, producer Himanshu Mehra, as well as Purohit, towards whom a case was lodged in Lucknow for allegedly harming religious feelings via the web series, were issued a transit pre-arrest bail by the Bombay high court.

Recently, ‘Tandav’, a nine-episode political drama featuring Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia as well as Ayyub, began streaming.
