According to a case study provided by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two ladies in New York were diagnosed as the first US cases of ringworm, a highly contagious, drug-resistant fungal infection. 

The virus has never been diagnosed in the United States, although government medical authorities are investigating more instances.

“Tinea is a common, highly infectious, superficial infection of the skin, hair, or nails driven by dermatophyte moulds,” according to the CDC research, adding that severe, antifungal-resistant tinea cases have emerged in South Asia over the last decade. According to the report, It has become epidemic proportions in the region.

According to the study, the 2 patients, 28 and 47 years old, had lesions on their thighs, buttocks, necks, and bellies.

In 2021, the first patient experienced a broad pruritic eruption and underwent her first dermatologic evaluation in her third trimester of pregnancy. “She had no other known underlying medical conditions, no known contacts to a person with a similar rash, as well as no recent international travel history,” according to the study.

The second patient, who was in Bangladesh in the summer of 2022 and had no significant medical issues, experienced a widespread eruption. 

Her family members also had comparable outbreaks, and she was treated with topical antifungal and also steroid combination creams.

The typical dermatologist-recommended treatment for the skin infection has not worked. The CDC has warned people to exercise caution in any situation that can result in a skin ailment.
