India has dropped to third place in the ICC Test rankings
India with Australia taking the top spot after a dominant Ashes series.
Australia surpassed India and India has dropped at the top of the Test rankings after a 4-0 thrashing of England in the recently concluded Ashes series, even though the Virat Kohli-led side blew a 1-0 lead against South Africa.
India dropped to third place after a 1-2 series loss in South Africa, while inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) winners New Zealand retained second place after a 1-1 draw at home against Bangladesh. Including the hosts’ first-ever loss to Bangladesh at home across formats.
After losing the second and third Tests, India dropped to second place after winning the first in Centurion.
South Africa’s 2-1 win over India at home moved them up to the fifth place. While England remained in fourth place following a disastrous Ashes campaign in Australia.
Australia is three points ahead of India in the rankings, with 119 points. India played 14 Tests in 2021, winning eight of them. Last year, they were defeated in three Tests. Including a heartbreaking defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand.
Pakistan dropped one spot to sixth place, while Sri Lanka, the West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and Ireland remained. Kohli’s final tour as India’s Test captain was to South Africa, where he stepped down following the series defeat.
Before the T20 World Cup last year, Kohli announced his intention to resign. As India’s T20I captain, and in December, he was replaced as India’s ODI captain by Rohit Sharma.
