Gambhir: Gill Fortunate to Have Kohli, Rohit’s Support

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has praised young ODI captain Shubman Gill, saying he is fortunate to have experienced campaigners like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma by his side. Gambhir noted that having such seniors around helps Gill both on the field and with difficult decisions off it, particularly when it comes to team selection.

Backing Gill Through a Tough Selection Job

Gambhir acknowledged that dropping established players from India’s playing eleven is never easy, and doing so as a young leader makes the task even harder for both captain and coach. Despite these challenges, he felt Gill has handled the responsibility well and “ticked all the boxes” so far in his young captaincy tenure.

A Rocky Start in the Numbers

Gill’s results as ODI skipper have been underwhelming to date, with just six wins from 12 matches and series losses against England, Australia and New Zealand. Even so, Gambhir remained confident that Gill’s approach is sound and that results will eventually reflect the effort being put in, calling his overall method correct despite the rough patch.

Looking ahead, India will look to build momentum with two upcoming assignments: a three-match home ODI series against the West Indies later this month, followed by a five-match away series in New Zealand. Both series are seen as important building blocks as the team works toward the 2027 World Cup, with Gambhir and Gill’s partnership central to shaping India’s top order and overall strategy in the format over the next year.
