India takes 41 medals at the Asian Youth Para Games
India won the most medals in athletics, with 22 athletes finishing on the podium eight won gold, six silver, and eight bronze.
Indian para-athletes returned to India on Wednesday after winning a record-breaking 41 medals at Bahrain’s Asian Youth Para Games. The Indian team won 12 gold medals, 15 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals at the continental para youth games in Riffa.
The Indian para shuttlers returned with 15 medals, including three from Tokyo Paralympian Palak Kohli, Sanjana Kumari, and Hardik Makkar. India won three medals in swimming, including one silver and two bronze, and a bar of silver in powerlifting.
The continental youth showpiece event, from December 2 to 6, drew over 700 athletes from around 30 countries.
The athletes competed in nine sports: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair badminton, boccia, goalball, wheelchair powerlifting, wheelchair swimming, wheelchair table tennis, wheelchair taekwondo, and wheelchair taekwondo.
Simranjeet Singh had two field goals, and Harmanpreet Singh and Hardik Singh had penalty corner goals. In the second quarter, India fell behind 3-1 before rallying to tie the game at 3-3. Rupinder Singh converted a penalty stroke to give India the lead and complete their comeback, Simranjeet concluded.
This is India’s third Olympic bronze medal. They last won an award in 1972, when they took bronze in Munich. India is the most successful men’s hockey team with eight gold medals in Olympic history.
India was on the verge of collapse when they fell behind 3-1 in the 24th minute to a tenacious Germany that piled pressure on the eight-time champions. On the other hand, India kept an eye out for counter-attacking opportunities. Harmanpreet could not convert a PC that India received two minutes after falling behind 3-1.
