36 Farmhouse film review: Subhash Ghai returns to form in the OTT space

If you’re looking for a neat, intelligent, and short thriller and have been yearning for a good Subhash Ghai film for ages, 36 Farmhouse film review may be the answer, not least because of how well Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, and Flora Saini elevate it.

Subhash Ghai has delivered some of the biggest hits in Indian cinema history, starring some of the biggest stars. However, he hasn’t directed anything noteworthy in over two decades, with all of his subsequent efforts after 1999 Taal’s being not only critically panned but also failing miserably at the box office, which would’ve no doubt piqued the interest of a hardcore commercial filmmaker like him far more.

There’s also the issue that, except for Meri Jung and Karz, none of his successful films have aged well. So, does the celebrated veteran redeem himself with his foray into the OTT space, 36 Farmhouse film review, starring Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, Amol Parashar, Ashwini Kalsekar, Barkha Singh, and Flora Saini? Yes, to a certain extent.

What is it all about?

During the lockdown, a father and son duo (Sanjay Mishra and Amol Parashar) skip their journey back to their village to take up residence in the eponymous 36 Farmhouse under the guise of jobs they’re not qualified to handle to make a quick whack. However, they soon discover that the owner (Vijay Raaz) and his estranged extended family are harboring some dangerous secrets, all of which are linked to the family matriarch’s will.

What isn’t

At times, the tone shifts to some silly, gimmicky humor detract from the thriller trappings and suspense of the film. Also, Ghai should have avoided composing the music and songs because he appears to be out of his element here. Furthermore, the production values and cinematography by Akhilesh Shrivastava are outstanding.
