On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump shared a video in which he stated that after being treated with an experimental drug from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. he was cured of coronavirus disease.
After he was observed hailing it in the video as a lifesaver, Covid-19 patients from around the country called for the antibody-based Regeneron to participate in clinical trials. The drug company said it had requested federal regulators to approve the emergency use of its antibody therapy for Covid-19.
What is Regeneron?
According to the Mint study, REGN-COV2, a mixture of 2 monoclonal antibodies, was specifically engineered to inhibit the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.
“A statement released by the pharmaceutical company said,” To develop REGN-COV2, Regeneron scientists analyzed thousands of fully human antibodies produced by the company’s VelocImmune mice that have been genetically engineered to have a human immune system, as well as antibodies found from humans recovering from Covid-19.
Under a compassionate use scheme, Trump received the antibody cocktail last Friday.
Late last month, Regeneron announced preliminary results from a trial showing that in coronavirus patients outside the hospital, the combination could minimize virus levels.
Free medicine for all Americans!
Regeneron said it currently provides available doses for nearly 50,000 patients and plans to have available doses over the next few months for 300,000 patients.
In a statement, the company said that under its deal with the US government, the latter would be liable for the delivery of the medication and would have to make the initial doses available free of cost to the American people if the US Food and Drug Administration provided an emergency authorization.
Donald Trump Health
The President’s blood tests from Monday indicate that he had defensive antibodies, Donald Trump’s doctor said, but compared to the pharmaceutical firm, those were possibly the Regeneron antibodies he was given at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and not a normal reaction.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci, US chief of infectious disease, has figured out that we do not know whether the President is okay since the condition of patients can go downhill more than a week after the first signs have been seen.
However, according to news agency Bloomberg, White House physician, Dr. Sean Conley said the President should be able to return to public appearances as early as Saturday. On Monday, Trump, who has afflicted a week ago with the virus, returned to the White House. He has also said he feels healthy and plans to stage Saturday’s election rally.
